Grief, Loss, Trauma

Girl in Therapy

Grief is the experience of sorrow, distress and sadness an individual feels after a loss or traumatic event. We grieve when we lose something of significance - the greater the significance of what we have lost, the more extreme is our grief.

Loss refers to circumstances where we are unable to keep, have or get something that has significant meaning to us. This may be an important object, relationship or might relate to our security and sense of self.

Trauma takes place when we experience a disturbing, distressing and overwhelming event. It may occur from a single event or repeated experiences. A traumatic event is one in which a person’s life or safety is threatened, or there is a risk of serious harm or injury.

Our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and beliefs can be affected by grief, loss and trauma. Our response might be immediate and short term, or it might take a longer time for our reaction to take effect. Grief loss and trauma is a personal experience and the time needed for recovery is different for every person.
